about me

Hi:) I'm Jolie. I'm a working actress living in Los Angeles with my husband and 2-year-old son.

Do you know what it's like being an actress in Los Angeles? It's simultaneously:

insane,

fun,
bizarre,
harrowing,
exciting,
maddening,
riveting,
and boring-as-hell.

Not unlike your Grandma taking you to have the expert photogs at K-Mart work their portrait magic after dressing yourself in a rad 80s outfit (see above).

When Show Business is good, it's really good. But when it's been a while between jobs, you're so desperate for a creative outlet that it's not uncommon to pin all your hopes and dreams on, say, a small guest-star on a CSI:MIAMI episode, fully believing that it will express all you have to offer as a creative entity. This can only end badly. Especially if you're shooting all day on a small, musty boat getting tangled split-ends and active rosacea from the whipping, salty wind.

After many years and many CSI:MIAMI moments, I made a concerted effort to take all my eggs out of one basket and spread them around: learned the true value of having a hobby. I took up knitting and couldn't stop. I always liked to cook so I enrolled in a 20-week cooking course. It was such a relief to find other things to enjoy. And in both cases, having a desire to create something and then see it through to an end result was tremendously satisfying. I didn't have to wait by the phone for my agent to tell me I could. Feeling bolstered, I started writing more, tweaking recipes, documenting my experiences in the kitchen and out in the Crazytown that is Los Angeles.

I love to act and play other people but Joeycake is all me.

A few random things:

  • I have a love/hate relationship with bangs (see above).
  • I have an embarrassing addiction to Reality Television which I justify by believing I watch ironically.
  • I make my bed every day.
  • Hard-boiled eggs make me want to hurl.
  • I have an unusual talent for getting songs stuck in my head. Repeat offenders include "Gimme a Break" (the Kit Kat song), "The Adams Family" theme song and "Hail to the Chief". (If any of these get stuck in your head right now, I'm truly sorry.)
  • I talk to myself.  Like a lot.
  • Making my husband laugh is my favorite thing ever.
  • I love to be outside. You might see me in Runyon Canyon. If you do, say hi:)
  • I miss this sweet lady every day.
  • I shamelessly know every word to Les Miserables. And most musicals.
  • I hate that I care what celebrities carry in their purses.
  • I want a glass of wine right now.

Thanks for hanging out here. I can't tell you how much it means to me.
xoxo

  1. Jolie, I like you. A lot. We should take a sewing class again together.

And I agree, that scene (from whatever show) WAS INDEED your best work ever.

  4. Oh my gosh, I just watched the blind date, Erin and John, clip. I met my husband on a blind date set up by his sister. I walked into my dorm parlor to see such a hunk standing there. He turned to me and said, "Oh, I thought that you would be blond." Being very brunette, I answered, "Well, I hope you still want to go out." He said yes, we have now been married 45 years, have 3 children, 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. And now.................I am his caregiver, he has cancer and every day is just as precious to us as first meeting.

  5. Hey! I'm a (sort of) actress/writer/cool girl living in LA. I read your blog about Korean spas and I think I lost a contact as I was laughing so damn hard! Such a brilliantly written piece! I'm going to a spa for the first time with my friend from school and I'm a little scared about us being totally naked! So, I've been reading all sorts of blogs to get myself familiar with it all, but your blog was by far the best and funniest! I'm just going to remember on Monday your mantras so if I get worried or apprehensive your words will be in my mind! You're awesome! :D
